Dr. Loretta M. Jordan proudly hails from Los Angeles, being born and raised in the heart of the city. She was imparted with a philosophy to ensure that she cautiously approached life with insight and compassion by using skills to contribute to her community to fight for equity and justice, especially for the marginalized in society. As a result, she follows Shirley Chisholm’s edict to pull up a folding chair if they don’t give you a seat at the table.
With this inspiration, she endeavored a life of service to others through three decades of administrative roles in higher education, most recently as the Assistant Vice President of Student Services. Additionally, as a champion for mental health and wellness for people of color, Dr. Jordan has dedicated fifteen-years to psychotherapy services to underrepresented populations who are untrusting of seeking services as a consequence of racial disparities that imbue the systems of life’s needs, such as health care, education and judicial.
Dr. Jordan sought higher education to build her platform and arsenal of thought-changing actions and strengthen her temerity to stand for equal treatment for those around her. She secured a bachelor’s degree in history from UCLA, a master’s degree in educational management from the University of La Verne and a master’s degree in clinical psychology with an emphasis in marriage and family therapy from the Chicago School of Psychology. She finalized her formal education with the acquisition of a doctoral degree in clinical psychology.
Achievements that catapulted Dr. Jordan to her next set of goals were writing federal and state grants that were awarded more than six-million dollars to fund programs for low-income students, establishing foster youth services, drafting curriculum for graduate student’s clinical psychology courses, and supporting advocacy, both state wide and nationally, as an executive member in the Compton branch of the NAACP.
Dr. Jordan is vehemently committed to disrupting the systemic racism that plagues the nation and impedes opportunities and rights that should be afforded to all but unfortunately are only given to some. Proverbially, she carries those folding chairs with her everywhere she journeys, in the event that she needs to share one with someone who was denied theirs.
